Countdown to Coachella: Cults

Cults is one of those groups that have you hooked from first listen. This New York duo has the backings of frontwoman Madeline Follin’s vocals and Brian Oblivion to go with the edgy but cool teen pop sound. Cults has been making a lot of noise in the music scene as they recently signed to Columbia Records, and performed a gig at SXSW.

What I love about Cults is that a year ago, they were just making music for friends — with no type of internet buzz. Seriously, that’s dope. Maybe this whole music site that was supposed to be a joke will land me a job with MTV! or something a year from now. Well, take a listen to CULTS and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with ‘5os pop sound that makes you want to take pictures of two gummy bears kissing each other. Okay, that was random.

Cults will be playing on Day 2 of the Coachella Festival. Check out their latest track entitle “You Know What I Mean,” and be sure to download their EP after the jump:

Countdown to Coachella: Lil’ B The BasedGod

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Countdown to Coachella post and I’ve been wanting to write about Lil B for a while now. Some of you may know how much I used to hate Lil B, and I don’t mean just the “he’s a whack rapper” kind of hate. I used to think he should not be allowed near a microphone or on Earth. But, things have changed. I still haven’t listened to a FULL Lil B song but at least I respect this dude’s craziness and his ability to capture his audience and fans even though those people may be crazy.

If you’ve been a casual reader of the site, you would know that I’m a big fan of the Pigeons and Planes music site, and really, me and Confusion have gone back and forth about Lil B’s place in rap. He convinced me to take a listen, and though I’m still not a fan, I actually like Lil B now. He does some crazy ass shit; and his fans envy that. I mean, a fan of Lil B told him that he can fuck his girlfriend. That’s mad love from a fan right there.

Well, I’m actually pretty stoked to see Lil B perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I may not have my girlfriend to offer him, but I’ll definitely give him my two ears for a full listen of his music. So, if you have yet to listen to Lil B’s music like I have, go ahead and peep the next few tracks. I’ll actually be listening to every track I post. I want to get my Wonton Soup on before Coachella comes about in–holy shit, there’s only–24(!!) days!

First off, check out this vid to see how crazy this dude is. He’s worn the same shoes since forever ago. Apparently, he didn’t want to buy any new shoes until he received a record deal.

Countdown to Coachella: Chromeo

Time is flying and the days are getting closer! As of now there are only 67 days until Coachella. Today, I leave you with an afternoon of partying with Chromeo, while I go stare at a computer at work. The “Arab/Jewish partnership”  will be rocking the stage at this years Coachella. I missed them at Audiotistic 2009 but will finally get the chance to see them in 67 days. Take a listen and get a taste of what is coming your way! If you can’t make it out to Coachella and

Countdown to Coachella: The Twelves

Remixes and covers usually get a bad rap from people as most consider cover bands too unoriginal for comfort. But The Twelves are a different story. Mixing great artists such as Fever Ray, Radiohead and site favorite Two Door Cinema Club with electronic rhythms and upbeat guitars, The Twelves are changing the face of remixes everywhere. This Brazilian duo has the amazing ability to take a song and turn it into an upbeat plethora of catchy rhythms and dance-friendly beats which rival, if not top, the original songs themselves! Along with their remixes, they also produced their own tracks,

Countdown to Coachella: YELLE

Only 79 days until the dancing shoes come on for YELLE. They were a part of Coachella in 2008 and are coming back for this years event. The very first time I stumbled upon this French band was on Youtube a couple years ago. I was searching for French artists to use for a presentation in my French class at the time. I’m pretty stoked to see a french act and actually understand a good amount of what they’re saying. I’m curious as to what creativity will bloom for their

Countdown to Coachella: Cage The Elephant

When I decided to do this whole Countdown to Coachella thing, I didn’t know which bands I would be posting first. I wanted to post music that you guys may not know, since most of the people I know are into the Drakes and Kanye Wests of the music world, but also music that I absolutely love. Therefore, today’s Coachella post is all about Cage The Elephant. Ever since I first heard “Back Against The Wall,” I’ve been a huge fan and I’ve had “Tiny Little Robots” as the Song in my Head (Ha! I finally used our name on a post).

Cage the Elephant is a modern rock band without any of that grunginess most bands try to incorporate into their music. As it stands for most rock bands, your music either originates from the UK or your growing popularity started there and Cage The Elephant has a big fan base overseas. Their newest album; Thank You, Happy Birthday; was released on January 11 and they promised to “launch the new year with a ferocious kick of (gut)nut-grabbing rock & roll.”

Check out a few of my favorite tracks below and their latest single, “Shake Me Down.”

Countdown to Coachella: Neon Trees

There are 81 days until Neon Trees takes the stage at Coachella. Many of you may recognize them from their catchy single “Animal.” This rock band from Provo, Utah has come a long way since their nationwide exposure in 2008. To think that they released their debut album on March 16, 2010 and soon they will be in one of the greatest music festivals in California. That’s a significant accomplishment. Don’t forget to support them if you’re a fan. If you’re not familiar with the band, don’t be shy and

Countdown to Coachella: Phantogram

Despite the incredible lineup, I will not be attending this year’s Coachella. One glance at the list and I already know what I will be missing out on. But for those who will be attending I bring to you today’s artist: none other than the brilliant and unfamiliar Phantogram!

Sure to turn their share of heads this year at Coachella, Phantogram is the up-and-coming dynamic duo from the state of New York. Mixing  moody electronic rhythms, ethereal lyrics and fleeting synthesizers with beats commonly used in hip-hop, this band brings their own unique, psychedelic (and almost binaural if you listen long enough) flavor to the table.

With their debut album, Eyelid Movies, out only a year ago, this Saratoga Springs based band is already making a name for themselves.  Featuring great tracks such as the “Mouthful of Diamonds” and “When I’m Small” (which was recently featured in the US’s adaptation of the British teen drama hit Skins), Eyelid Movies, is definitely one of my favorite albums of last year. So turn off your lights, grab your headphones and lay on the floor, you are about to experience the psychotropic sound that is Phantogram.
