AusScene: Kimbra

Somebody That I Used to Know. It’s the global hit – complete with number one spot in the Triple J Hottest 100 and a cover featured on Glee – that shot Gotye to international recognition, making for the ultimate grassroots-indie-dude-hitting-it-huge story, et cetera, et cetera.

But how much do you know about the velveteen vocals that coat the second verse; the gorgeous lady who stood starkers next to Wally whilst paint crept over her body; the second dimension that alleviates the song to its pivotal levels of tension?

Kimbra

Kimbra

That would be Kimbra, and damn, that girl is a talent.

Kimbra Lee Johnson’s image and sound is a mixture of sweet yet smouldering, cute yet fierce, mature yet youthful. On her debut album, Vows, the twenty-one year old took elements of the unconventional and the classic, moulding the two together into her own brand of versatile quirk.

It’s that time of year again. No, not the holiday spirit, but the blogosphere spirit where everyone turns in their top albums of the year list. We’ve never been one to make lists. Hell, we’re not really too deep into the whole “album” spirit. With that in mind, we’ve created a list of some of our top singles of this year. There are obviously plenty others that we love, but most of them are here because we posted about them on the site. Of course we love the Adeles, Florence and The Machines, and Radioheads of the 2011 music year. It’d be crazy not to. Check out some of our favorite tracks of 2011:

M83 – “Midnight City”

Gotye – “Somebody That I Used To Know”

Penguin Prison – “Don’t Fuck With My Money”

Monarchy – “Maybe I’m Crazy”

Keep going, there’s more:

Have you ever realized there’s always one song/artist that you play throughout the week or weekend? It just gets stuck in your head, right? At least, that’s the case for me. This whole last week was Gotye’s “Somebody I Used To Know.”

This time around, Monarchy’s “Maybe I’m Crazy” takes the award for non-stop plays. This single is off their upcoming album Around the Sun which is now available for per-order on iTunes.

New Track/Video: Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know

Have you ever labeled a song “Amazing?” That’s exactly what Gotye’s track “Somebody That I Used To Know” is. The telling of a devious ex who stooped so low to become just somebody that you used to know.

“Somebody That I Used To Know”  features Kimbra and is from the Gotye album Making Mirrors due to be released July 11, 2011.

If the lyrics don’t remind you of that ex, then check the video for the cool visuals.

Can someone do body art on me? I don’t have great physique but, hmm, yeah I have no incentive.

Be sure to check out “Eyes Wide Open” as well by Gotye.
