Review: Night Riots at The House of Blues
We caught Night Riots a year ago at The Roxy Theatre (back when they were known as “PK”) and had a chance to talk to all of the guys. You can check out our interview here. Anyway, back then we knew little of the band as they were just coming off a new EP. But seeing them perform live, they grew on us instantly.
Night Riot’s songs are fit perfectly for intimate venues such as the Roxy Theatre. On this night, though, the only thing silencing the band was the House of Blues’s sound system itself. Buried in the middle of Downtown Disney’s strip of outlet shops and family restaurants is the iconic House of Blues. The sound system inside the venue matched the atmosphere outside: quiet enough to hear a whisper.
Night Riots came out in a contagious manner on their first song in “Berelain.” Then, that’s when the Travis’s voice started deafening four rows into the audience. Provided that many in the audience already knew most of the songs, the crowd wasn’t disparaged; in fact, it was still one of the liveliest shows of the night.
Throughout the entire show, Night Riots kept the audience moving on their feet. They played a perfect set that focused on getting their fans’ attention and having fun playing their new material. You would have almost missed their newest song, “Remedy,” since they played it immediately after a slow favorite in “London.”
At the end of the show, after the lights dimmed and the sound was cut off, Travis came out in what looked like was going to be an acoustic set. He played in acapella, brought people’s hands up once the acoustic guitar started filling the first few rows with vibes, and finally the entire band came out thumping straight into “1920.”
It seems like Night Riots have a few loyal fans and their live shows are a gift to them. The music is just the wrapper. I was glad to open it up find myself at a great gig.
