Album Review: Breaking Laces – When You Find Out
Breaking Laces is a Brooklyn-based trio who have perfected their music in their latest album, When You Find Out, which came out yesterday. The band consists of lead singer and songwriter Willem Hartong along with bandmates Rob Chojnacki and Seth Masarsky. Having won multiple contests and selling over 40,000 albums, Breaking Laces is setting the bar higher for themselves. There’s something about Breaking Laces’ wildy daring lyrics that proves this band should do just fine in the future. As for this album, nothing sticks out more to me than the band’s resonance of almost symphonic-like tune varied among a unique down-to-earth type feeling that carries the album to greater enjoyment.
Did that make sense? No? Good, because the album jeers in madness from acoustic-pop to a more rock-influenced theme throughout which is surprisingly pleasant to the ears. Listening to the band’s earlier work, I noticed a very similar pattern: they have a hit-’em-hard mindset. Whether it’s to hit you in the heart with their songs about that one girlfriend that you can’t let go in the track “What We Need,” or the rock-heavy tune in “This World.”
“When You Find Out” is the album’s title and the band’s first single for the album which is full of sound and also hints at the bands incredible lyrics.
When you find out
that I’m in love with you.
Are you gonna break my heart
but tell me that you feel it, too.
I’ve got way too many questions
and I’m looking for a clue.
When you find out
tell me what you’re gonna do
It’s true some might find it simplistic, but I like to say they put an edge on simplicity.
“Shopping for Two,” is a feel-good humble song about being in a relationship. It’s filled with a concentration of guitar chords and some vocal tunes that had me singing along. Though “Shopping for Two” and “When You Find Out” are great tracks, my favorite on the album is definitely “Laser Beams.” This track embodies all of Breaking Laces’ amazing elements in one awesome track. You have that rock-feel, a hint of acoustic-pop, and the vocals to match the greatness.

“When You Find Out” is a 12-track album filled with awesomeness. The last couple of days I’ve been extremely sick and I usually prefer to be deaf when I’m sick. Reason behind it is, when sick, any little sound annoys the heck out of me; that was until I played When You Find Out non-stop. Honestly, I probably would have gone crazy if I had not listened to Breaking Laces’ mellow-but-emphatic tunes. A good listen all-throughout. Overall, the band have a good thing going. I didn’t expect to fall in love with the album but they have some work to do to hit it big. Though, I prefer this band perfect their tunes before hitting mainstream. Even with so little that went wrong in their craft, Breaking Laces will be played non-stop in my rotation.
As with everything we post, the 12-track album is definitely one to recommend. With that in mind, be sure to check out their East coast tour starting with the dates below:
