The Southern California Summer Music Festival Lineup
Summertime is upon us and for Los Angeles that means heat, traffic, and beach trips. The music scene, though, is fourth. One of the great things about Los Angeles, aside from Dodgers games and fast cars, is the talent this city houses. From Local Natives to Red Hot Chili Peppers, they’re based in LA. The venues hosting some of the very best include The Wiltern, The Music Box, and The Palladium. But most of the time it’s in festivals where they make their name known.
This summer, Los Angeles is host to a slew of festivals. Think about it as Coachella spread out over three months. Everywhere from Downtown LA, Pasadena and even Pomona, there will be a host of free or cheap music festivals. The only thing you’ll ever have to worry about is Los Angeles parking (click for real-time parking info), but that shouldn’t hold you up. Here are some of the best from Southern California in order of which festivals are coming up first.
June
Make Music Pasadena Festival – Home to the largest free music festival in Southern California, the festival boasts four outdoor stages in the heart of Pasadena. Past performers include Cults, Matt & Kim, Best Coast, and Ra Ra Riot. This year’s lineup includes Yacht, Tanlines, Superhumanoids and a few special guests yet to be named. There’s no telling who else can be featured but a name going around is Local Natives.
Jubilee Music Festival – One of the best festivals in Los Angeles, this year’s Jubilee Music Festival features the likes of Free Energy, The Drums and many others. Jubilee also features comedy and literature and takes place in Silverlake.
Vans Warped Tour – This year the festival stops in Pomona for two days along with other stops around Southern California. There’s a reason why they do it twice at the L.A. County Fairgrounds: It’s one of the only VWT locations with all grass. If you’re planning on going to any other stop, think again: you’ll be trying to dance on blacktop amidst 100-degree weather.
July
Bloomfest LA – Bloomfest isn’t necessarily a music festival but more of an arts festival. That doesn’t mean there is a drop-off in talent. The Neighbourhood and Superhumanoids headlined the event. Bloomfest is another free festival in Los Angeles that has many features outside of just music. Located in the Arts District, Bloomfest LA is a combination of Music, Arts, and the community.
Viva Pomona! – Viva Pomona brings you the best of SoCal bands. Mainly brought aboard by the good people at Burger Records, if you’ve been to any festival small festival in LA, it’s almost certain you’ve seen a few of these bands perform. Viva Pomona is hosted in downtown Pomona at The Glasshouse.
August
Sunset Strip Music Festival – The sixth annual SSMF is coming early this year. Even better? Linkin Park will be headlining the street festival. The Sunset Street Music Festival is hosted in the heart of Sunset in front of The Roxy and a tribute event at the House of Blues. The three-day festival includes outdoor stages, beer gardens, and smaller venues to take in all the action.
Fuck Yeah Fest! – Our favorite name of any fest. FYF is a two-day festival hosted at LA State Historic Park. The lineup is brought by GoldenVoice, yeah those guys who created Coachella, but their lineup always varies from the one you see perform in the desert. One of the underrated parts of this weekend is the activity outside of the music, being LA there’s plenty to do with The Echo hosting events, and comedians being brought along to lighten up the mood.
September
Rock The Bells – They’re bringing back Eazy-E to perform with Bone Thugs and Ol’ Dirty Bastard to perform with Wu-Tang Clan. What else can you ask for? Check here for the entire lineup. Crazy.
If October still counts for you, the Culture Collide Festival is another week-long festival that brings along bands from different cultures performing in four different venues. Pretty badass. Hard Summer Fest is this summer, too, but that’s not my type of party.
Canceled or still no word: Sound and Fury, Pacific Festival
Any festivals we should add to the list?
