Justin Kline: Doormat EP
We’re long-time fans and supporters of Justin Kline here at DSIMH, so I was of course excited to find out that there was some brand new music from the Power-pop Singer/Songwriter. After last year’s Cabin Fever Songs, the Doormat EP is somewhat of a return to form for Kline.
The four songs of the EP welcome back the sparkling synthesizers, lively drums, and lush electric guitars the defined his Triangle and Six Songs EPs. Which is not to say that this is merely a rehashing of old ideas. Rather, Kline elegantly joins the moody lyrics of Cabin Fever Songs with the sunshiney music of his earlier work, creating an interesting dissonance and irony, most notably on “I Wanna Feel Normal”. Bookend tracks “Doormat” and “Drop The Ball” offer more power than pop on the power-pop spectrum, and although Kline’s voice is better suited for more easygoing music, he certainly pulls off the extra edge.
More than anything though, this EP just makes me wish we can get even more new music from Justin Kline. Hopefully there’s another full-length album in the works!
