AusScene: The Jezabels – “The End”
2013 has been an absolutely killer year for Australian music and in my role as adviser on the good tunez I have failed miserably. Nonetheless, I feel like the return of one of my favourite Sydney bands, The Jezabels, must be celebrated. After a triumphant 2012, destroying the joint with their debut album, Prisoner, and tearing up the country with tours, they made a quiet return to the studio in 2013.
“The End” is the first delicious taster from their new record The Brink, due out in February 2014. I feel like the universe carefully selected the release date for “The End” to correspond with the end to a major relationship in my life. When they aired it for the first time on triple j, you would have found me curled up on the floor of the living room, emotionally wrecked but rolling in the familiar. Despite this, the song – as front woman Hayley Mary describes it – is not so much about endings, but also new beginnings. It’s not sad, but hopeful. Eighties synths, tumbling drums, soaring vocals – The Jezabels are back.
