Show Review: St. Lucia at The Fox Theater
There was a special feeling in the air in Pomona on Friday night. In a city that’s known for the neighboring Glasshouse restaurants that house shows from time to time, this night was different. St. Lucia and Two Door Cinema Club were coming to town.
Friday night was supposed to be Capital Cities’ first appearance on the tour but their schedule had them in Philly. So, that meant St. Lucia had to warm up Two Door Cinema Club, one of the biggest acts to come to the Fox Theater since its renovation.
Jean-Phillip Grobler is the mastermind behind St. Lucia and he looked calm as ever when he stood in front of the sold-out crowd that had been lining up hours before the doors even opened. It was St. Lucia’s first time in Pomona and though the night was still young with an 8pm start time, the band carried a festive crowd through their entire near-45-minute set.
But it didn’t really start off well. The crowd was silent at first, but that’s no hack at St. Lucia — many were mostly there for Two Door Cinema Club. Though, once the familiar tune to “Closer Than This” started playing, the vibes started to roll. From then on, it was a ride to enjoy.
St. Lucia played their new single, and personal favorite, “Elevate” midway through their set which was probably one of my favorite sets I’ve experienced. Mixed in toward the end of the set was “September” and “we Got It Wrong” from the band’s previous EPs.
In the end, St. Lucia played a much more lively performance than when they opened for Two Door Cinema Club a year ago during the Beacon tour. Hopefully soon St. Lucia will be headlining their own shows because, truthfully, they’re not far from being great.
