Goodman- “Like What They Like”
“Like What They Like” begins like a faucet being turn on full blast. One moment there’s silence, and the next, the song is on full blast. Goodman doesn’t have time for intros with a song like this. It’s too urgent. Its message too important to waste any time. That feeling of urgency and immediacy keeps up throughout the whole track. It’s under 3 minutes and every second counts, every moment is filled to the brim. For a song that sardonically criticizes the musical landscape, that kind of sonic megaphoning is the only way. And although Goodman may be young, he’s smart enough to know that.
We loved the 23 year old New Yorker’s first full-length album, What We Want, so we’re always excited to check out what he’s working on now. “Like What They Like” is our first glimpse at what to expect on his upcoming sophomore LP. Produced and released at the always-fantastic Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen, the album should find the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist expanding on his unique brand of early-Costello-meets-lo-fi-indie-rock. If the rest is anything like “Like What They Like,” we’ll be sure to get more infectious melodies, subtle key changes, and jangly guitars. Until then, we’ll all have to settle with listening to this song on repeat. Or dusting off last year’s debut and giving it some more spins.
