Stream “Wait For Me” by Allison Weiss
Brooklyn based indie rock song writer Allison Weiss is gearing up to release her new full-length album Say What You Mean on April 16th via No Sleep Records. In the meantime, she has premiered a new song over at AltPress.
The song, “Wait For Me”, is a heartfelt folk song that exchanges Weiss’s usual punk outfit in favor of a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment ornamented with lush strings. The complex lyrics find our narrator leaving her significant other, upset but optimistic. She sees a brighter future for herself and is overwhelmed with a sense of freedom she had not had in her relationship.
At the same time, she is upset to be leaving this person and does not do so without reservations. She sings, “I wish with all my heart that I could stay” before going into her chorus explaining all the things that she’s been missing out on. The truly great moment of this song, what sets it apart from other break up songs (and Weiss apart from other songwriters), is the last line of the chorus. Right after she sings, “We’ll never make it and it wasn’t meant to be,” she concedes to one last scrap of hope, continuing with, “But I’ll wait if you’ll wait for me.” Similar to the Punch Brothers’ ”Don’t Get Married Without Me,” the character wants it both ways. She knows that she has to leave and go out on her own, that that is what is best for both of them, but at the same time, she wants to hold out to hope that it could work out another time.
This representation of conflicting emotions is what makes Weiss such a powerful songwriter. Her characters are given these very honest and realistic contradictions, which make her music come to life. Be sure to pre-order Say What You Mean here.
