So it’s that time of the year again for the BET Hip-Hop Awards Cyphers! Last year’s cyphers were certainly ones to remember, from The G.O.O.D. Music Cypher (Kanye West,Common, Pusha T, CyHi Da Prince & Big Sean) to the Father Like Sons Cypher (Ice Cube with his sons OMG & Doughboy, and Rev Run wit his sons Diggy and JoJo). Honestly I’m always a fan of the cyphers but this year I wasn’t so sure. When I heard they were gonna go in with “The Payback” instrumental by the legendary James Brown I was so hyped but No one really did it justice. Let’s get into them!

Cypher 1:

Big K.R.I.T.- This year he makes his Cypher debut, his delivery showed that he was nervous. He went in too early, his bars were rushed and when you go in like that people are not gonna feel you. I’m a big K.R.I.T. fan but I was disappointed when I heard him. Being from the south, you would think he would go h.a.m on this but I guess being around Tech N9ne got him nervous.

Tech N9ne- Leave it to Tech N9ne to make up for K.R.I.T.’s lagging. Like always he goes in with a classic flow rhythm. The first half you know your listening to Tech but then the second half you hear the monster come out of his gut. It was like listening to two different MCs. I was pleased with his freestyle but that who hand gesture thing was kind of annoying, I felt like he was casting a spell on me.

Machine Gun Kelly- Ladies and Gentlemen, another Yelawolf/Eminem wanna be. . . I’m just playing. The newly signed artist to Diddy’s BadBoy Records held his own with the veterans he was with. Delivery wasn’t anything new, sped up lyrics, pumped up body movement and word play rhymes; “They say it wasn’t my time, where the watch at? Now got that? They say it wasn’t my time, where the watch at? Watch that”. One last thing, did anyone notice that Biggie sample? “Who the heck is this. .”

Kendrick Lamar- Honestly one of the reasons I love Kendrick Lamar, is because he’s just so ill! He didn’t let me down with his no breath delivery and with a determined flow. The newly crowned King of Compton went hard and his final bar was funny; “Elvis would come back as a black if you was hot, your just a mascot on the Kim Kardashian ass shot”.

B.o.B.- No he didn’t freestyle about Airplanes or other girls having nothing on you, people need to stop hating on B.o.B cause Tyler, The Creator says so. He went in pretty good, he has grown so much as an artist and I was pleased with his freestyle. And ended with a little shout out to his label leader T.I.
